Darko Tresnjak To Direct New Off-Broadway Musical 'This Aint No Disco'
Yesterday it was still hush-hush. Today it's official.
Darko Tresnjak, who announced first at ShowRiz.com that he will be stepping down as artistic director of Hartford Stage after eight years, will be helming the world premiere of a new musical at off-Broadway's Atlantic Theater Company.
Tresnjak, who won a Tony Award for his staging the musical "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, " and helmed the still-running "Anastasia," will direct "This Ain't No Disco, " by Stephen Trask ("Hedwig and the Angry Inch") and Peter Yanowitz (original drummer of The Wallflowers, Exclamation Pony and the drummer in The Angry Inch on Broadway).
Trip Cullman, who was previously announced to direct, left the production because of scheduling conflicts, according to TheaterMania.com .
Featuring a book by Trask, Yanowitz, and Rick Elice ("Jersey Boys," " Peter and the Starcatcher," "The Addams Family"), performances will run June 29 to Aug. 12.
The production , which is being presented in cooperation with Miramax, is described: "Set against the grit, the garbage strikes, and the graffiti of 1979 New York City, 'This Ain't No Disco' tells the story of drifters and dreamers searching for their place in the night world of Studio 54 and Mudd Club. In their uptown-downtown quest for revelry and kinship, every decision is fateful in a city where one's fate can turn on a dime bag."
Tresnjak in also staging the final show of Hartford Stage's 2017-18 season, Athol Fugard's "A Lesson From Aloes." which will run May 17 to June 10. This fall, Tresnjak also directs the Met's production of the opera "Samson et Delila." Meanwhile "Anastasia" premieres in Madrid in September and then Stuttgart at the end of the year as the national North American kicks off in October.
